Basil Restaurant Review: Toast
Only a Little Bit of Burnt Toast…
by Alee Ong

Wake up on a weekend morning. Ask you mother for some eggs and a slice of toast. Nothing special, just a slice of toast. Well, this restaurant is not your simple slice of toast. Do not be fooled by its short and simplistic name. Toast, located in Novato, Marin County is not just a breakfast eatery. It serves you around the clock, meaning breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The inside of the restaurant makes you feel like you are surrounded by pieces of toast. With shelves filled with dried pasta, cans of Campbell's Tomato Paste, Heinz Ketchup, old time toasters, and more vintage galore, it makes you remember the good old times.
I went there for dinner and I wasn't disappointed. I went with a group of people and tried different dishes. Now, this place is great because if you feel like something light, they have it. You feel like something hardy? They will have that for you too. And guess what? You want something down the middle, not too light, not too heavy? By george they have that too! I wasn't too hungry, but I wanted something to fill in the gaps. I had ordered a Thai beef salad, and I absolutely loved it. The only thing I would have to put in the negative light is the fact that they over cooked my beef. It was too tough, and was tedious to chew. Also, my mom had the almond Chinese chicken salad, and it was an unfortunate disappointment. There were different things in the salad, such as black and white sesame seeds, juicy mandarin oranges, and refreshing lettuce. But oddly, there was still no taste. Perhaps a dash of sesame oil and soy sauce is in order? Another salad that didn't meet par was the widely-known, cobb salad. Cobb salads should have a myriad of flavors that come together in harmony and produce a smile on your face. This cobb salad was a bit too plain, and again, lacked flavor. I don't understand because my salad was extremely flavorful, and the only problem I had was the overcooked beef.
Moving on, to the tuna tar tare. I have mentioned tar tare twice prior to this review in my Michael Mina, and Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen. This tar tare was good, but after having it at Michael Mina's, this one is just okay. It was served over French baguette and with a citrus, creamy sauce. The bread on the bottom, towards the center, was a little soggy, and that meant they put a bit too much than the bread could take. Well, I suppose it wasn't all that bad, I don't mind having more tuna! Overall, it was pretty decent, and I wouldn't say no to going out there and trying it out. So why don't you head on down and experience a new kind of toast!
