OWIN Foundation
by Kelechi Uwaezuoke
Did you know that every 15 seconds, a child in Africa becomes an AIDS orphan? Or that a total of 2,102,400 children become orphans every year in Africa alone? Malnutrition, psychosocial destabilization, unjust child labor, loss of property rights and disruption of education are but a few of the challenges experienced by orphans and widows in Africa.
Founded in 2005, OWIN (Orphans and Widows In Need) Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit charitable foundation dedicated to providing aid to orphans and widows throughout the continent of Africa. OWIN Foundation is devoted to fighting the international crisis facing this vulnerable population by providing educational, financial, medical and spiritual support directly to orphans and widows in need. In an effort to reduce poverty and build social capital, OWIN has committed to helping individuals cultivate vocational skills. Through OWIN’s support, beneficiaries have gained skills in various trades including sewing, jewelry making, interior design, as well as cream and soap production. OWIN provides assistance, whenever possible by helping widows obtain small loans or offering direct financial support to begin entrepreneurial endeavors with the trade skills they have acquired. Additionally, support is given to help each orphan and widow maintain a healthy lifestyle by hosting food donation drives, healthcare fairs, on-site clinics, and health education programs.
No stranger to the plight and struggles of widows, Dr. Lilian Asomugha (author, devout Christian and founder of OWIN) has been providing assistance to widows and broken families for decades and her son Nnamdi Asomugha, (Oakland Raider and three -time Pro Bowler) is following closely in her footsteps. “Even as I take the field against the NFL's fiercest competitors, I can't help but think about the daily challenges that orphans and widows in need are facing in Africa and around the world. The score of a football game may seem important, but not when compared to the thought of children who have nowhere to sleep, or parents being unable to feed their family. For this reason, I have teamed up with OWIN Foundation to combine my passion for football with my desire to see families and children find the safe and nurturing environment they need in times of crisis.” The Tackle Poverty Fund was created to provide not only myself but the fans an opportunity to help orphans and widows in need. Every time I tackle a player I will give $100 to OWIN Foundation. Fans can help "Tackle Poverty" with a pledge of their own and make a huge difference in the lives of the families that benefit from OWIN Foundation!
